TIAX is developing a compact, portable, and reusable intraosseous (IO) infusion device to enable quick vascular access through the sternum for soldiers wounded in battle situations. Intraosseous infusion—an injection directly into the bone marrow cavity—is a rapid, reliable way to introduce critical resuscitation fluids into the vascular system when a traditional IV cannot be administered.
The TIAX design includes a driver/depth control system that can be used multiple times to insert a sterile IO needle set into the sternum. The system has three methods of preventing over-penetration of the sternum. The driver is a non-powered, completely mechanical device that includes safety and locator features for quick, easy, and safe operation in combat situations.
